NGUYEN THANH
2004
THEME
"SUBURB AND STILLNESS"
The year 2004 marks a distinct turning point in Nguyen Thanh's artistic expression. Departing from his earlier narratives and childhood memories of Vietnam's central plains — the rice fields and the timeless stories of farmers that often resurfaced in his works — the artist now turns toward a quieter, more introspective perspective.
In this phase, Nguyen Thanh repeatedly evokes the image of the graceful willow tree reflected on the calm surface of a lake — a symbol of serenity and subtle emotion. There is a peculiar stillness in these scenes, almost otherworldly. Gazing upon the drooping branches brushing the tranquil water, one can almost hear the faint hum of cicadas, a whisper of nature's own rhythm.
As Nguyen Thanh shares: "I seek a quiet place — where I can simply sit in meditation, close my eyes, and listen to the sound of a dry leaf falling, hearing clearly even the rhythm of my own breath." This meditative stillness contrasts sharply with the vibrant, bustling energy of urban life.
Through soft hues of earth, tree, and water — tinged with the scent of mud and sunlight — Nguyen Thanh transforms his canvas into a space of personal reflection. The gentle greens and pale yellows blend softly, creating a visual poetry of silence, a contemplation of the artist's inner world.
